COURSE DESCRIPTION International Observe the Moon Night (IOMN) is an annual worldwide public engagement program that encourages observation, appreciation, and understanding of our Moon and its connection to NASA planetary science and exploration. Everyone on Earth is invited to join the celebration by hosting or attending an event.

It is strategically scheduled around the first-quarter phase because the Sun's light strikes the lunar surface at a shallow angle, creating sharp, highly detailed shadows across craters and mountains. This year it takes place on the night of Saturday, September 19.

To celebrate, this 3-part course will, in the weeks leading up to the event, introduce students to: 1) The Moon’s origin, structure, and motions; 2) Moon observation activities; and 3) How to use binoculars and telescopes for stargazing.

In addition, on IOMN (Saturday 9/19), Alan will invite students to view the Moon with him using his binoculars and telescopes (weather permitting). Location TBD. 

INSTRUCTOR BIO Alan is a Maine Master Naturalist (Lewiston 2013), an NAI Certified Interpretive Guide, and a lifelong science and nature enthusiast. He's been watching the skies for as long as he can remember. He lives in Lisbon with his wife, Linda, and their boss (the cat!).
